OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has sparked debate by asserting that the current version of ChatGPT wields more influence than any individual human being.
Why Altman says ChatGPT surpasses human power
In a June 2025 essay titled The Gentle Singularity, Altman explained that the “power” he refers to is not about raw intelligence or reasoning ability, but about the technology’s capacity to reach and affect millions of people simultaneously. By delivering the same service to a global audience, a digital assistant can shape decisions, habits and information flows on a scale no single person can match.

According to a September 2025 study called How People Use ChatGPT, the platform already counted more than 700 million weekly active users at the end
