Mexican entertainment power couple Eugenio Derbez and Alessandra Rosaldo have expanded their family with a new four-legged member. The actors and producers announced the adoption of Kobe, a four-year-old Goldendoodle, via Instagram over the weekend, sharing a series of heartwarming photos alongside their daughter, Aitana.
The arrival marks a significant emotional milestone for the family, coming more than three years after the loss of their beloved English Bulldog, Fiona. “After more than three years of having lost our beloved Fiona and having thought about it a lot, we decided to adopt,” Rosaldo wrote in the emotional caption accompanying the post.
A Second Chance for Kobe
Kobe is a Goldendoodle, a hybrid breed resulting from crossing a Golden Retriever with a Poodle. According to Rosaldo, the dog was surrendered by his previous family, who claimed they could no longer care for him. However, upon welcoming him home, the couple discovered evidence suggesting a more difficult past.
“He is 4 years old and was abandoned by his family because ‘they could no longer take care of him.’ We, however, believe he was never really cared for,” Rosaldo revealed. She noted they found signs of trauma, abandonment, and mistreatment, indicating Kobe had not received the necessary care previously. The adoption offers the dog a stable, loving environment after what appears to have been a troubled start to life.
A Tribute to a Basketball Legend
The choice of name carries deep personal significance for the family. Rosaldo explained that their previous Golden Retrievers were named Shaq and Jordan, honoring NBA icons Shaquille O’Neal and Michael Jordan. Continuing this basketball-themed tradition, they chose “Kobe” as a tribute to the late Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant.
“Welcome to our family, Kobe. Here you will never lack care, cuddles, and above all, infinite love,” Rosaldo wrote, sealing the promise of a permanent home.
Remembering Fiona
The adoption closes a chapter of grief that began in August 2023, when the family lost Fiona, their English Bulldog of 11 years. Fiona had been a central figure in the household, frequently appearing on their reality show De viaje con los Derbez.
During the show’s fourth season, Derbez revealed the circumstances of Fiona’s sudden passing. While the family was playing tennis—one of Fiona’s favorite activities—she suffered a heart attack and collapsed in front of him while chasing balls. The loss left a profound void in the family dynamic.
A New Chapter Begins
With Kobe’s arrival, Derbez, Rosaldo, and Aitana are embarking on a new chapter. The adoption not only honors the memory of the pets they have loved before but also underscores a commitment to animal welfare, giving a second chance to a dog in need. For their millions of followers, the announcement serves as a public celebration of rescue and the enduring bond between humans and their canine companions.
